Sorry, teens- family history responsible for acne

Forget abstaining from french fries and candy bars. In yet another example of how our forebears shape us, a new study from Journal of Investigative Dermatology has found that the likelihood of getting sever acne during adolescence is largely determined by the teen’s family history with acne.

A study of 1,000 Iranian teens found that of those who had a sibling or parent with severe acne 20 percent had the same problem. In contrast, only 10 percent of teens who had no family history of severe acne developed the problem themselves. If the father had sever acne, the child’s chances of getting acne were twice what they would be if their mother had it.

So, along with risk for cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and alcoholism, teens can now blame their parents for their acne… and the trial of wearing second-hand clothes when everyone else shopped at Nordstrom.
